Bert Dempsey has more than 30 years’ experience as a practicing attorney with an emphasis on divorce. He received his law degree from Thomas Cooley law school in Lansing Michigan and practiced in Michigan for three years before coming to Colorado in 1982. He is admitted to practice in both Michigan (inactive status) and Colorado.
Bert learned during his own divorce in 1991 that although litigation can deliver a divorce it cannot help the parties heal from the trauma that is an inherent part of a system that pits one party against another. This is particularly devastating when the parties have minor children.
Bert sought a better way to assist divorcing couples and in 1996 trained in divorce and child custody mediation at CDR Associates in Boulder. Following that training Bert volunteered with the City of Boulder Divorce Mediation Project for several years until the city stopped providing mediation services for divorce cases. He has also received training in nonviolent communication from Marshall Rosenberg Ph. D.
Bert is a former member and chairperson of the board of directors of Blue Sky Bridge, a nonprofit organization assisting children and families dealing with childhood sexual abuse. Bert volunteered as a Court appointed special advocate for Voices for Children from 1991-97.
In the fall of 2001 Bert attended the first Collaborative law training in Colorado and soon thereafter, in association with other professionals at that training, became a founding member of the Rocky Mountain Collaborative Divorce Professionals, a Denver practice group. Shortly thereafter Bert became a founding member of the Boulder Collaborative Divorce group, CollaborativeDivorceBoulder.org.
Being a good attorney, mediator or being good at anything for that matter, is a combination of education and experience. Having similar experiences to someone you are trying to help is a tremendous asset to professionals working with divorcing couples.
As a result of these personal experiences and training Bert now offers:
- Collaborative divorce with the availability of other capable professionals from diverse specialty areas
- Mediation for working through divorce and post- divorce issues
- Divorce Consultation
Bert’s personal mission statement for his work is:
To help divorcing families avoid unnecessary pain, expense and conflict through multiple processes that acknowledge that it is the parties themselves, with guidance from their advisors, who are best qualified to determine their future and the future of their children.
Bert provides his clients with an honest assessment of the need for legal action, the potential cost of legal action, and the possible alternatives to legal action. In most cases, negotiation, mediation or collaboration can provide meaningful results at a lower cost than litigation.
